The external perimeter of community banks is no longer limited to the brick and mortar building in which their money and information resides.  The security landscape of today’s Internet connected bank has expanded to include global threats, such as Foreign Terrorist Organizations.  Therefore, banks must take a strong stance on security to ensure their information and assets are protected from a wide variety of threats.

Next-Generation RDC: The Small Business Market Heats Up

bw-rdcDespite the initial hype characterizing remote deposit capture (RDC) as a “fast track to the information superhighway,” financial institutions that were early deployers of RDC typically were slow to roll out the new technology to their customer bases.

Most institutions adopted a cherry-picking strategy, selecting only their well-established, solid businesses as targets. But the times, they are a-changing.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there are approximately 24 million small businesses. And BAI’s Banking Strategies reports that small businesses contribute more than 50 percent of the retail payments stream today.

Big Phish - Little Phish

bw-bigfishEntrepreneurial hackers have created ways to expand their phishing attacks.  The targets, financial institutions AND aspiring internet scammers.

A Moroccan group referring to itself as “Mr. Brain” is now offering free Phishing kits for download.  The software packages are extremely easy and quick to set up.  In minutes a web site pretending to be your bank is online and trying to trick people into divulging personal and financial information.  The phishing kit comes complete with templates for particular brands and craftily designed custom emails targeting the likes of Bank of America, PayPal and HSBC.

State of Security 2007

Apparently not scared enough!  Bankwide.com takes a look at the year in data security, and it’s appalling.  The State of Security report says it all.

2007 featured headlines from two wars: a real world war in Iraq, and a virtual war in cyberspace.  This year governments set out to enforce the legislation put forth, and they did.  Companies faced extreme fines, damaged consumer opinion and severe legal penalties.

2007 Bank Security Breaches

Taken from the Chronology of Data Breaches website, these are the bank security breaches for the year 2007. Generally a good year for financial data security, with only 20 breaches, 6 from banks, 4 from credit unions.

The breaches ranged from a spreadsheet left in an old bank desk, to boxes stored in a storage unit, that no one payed rent on. Stolen laptops accounted for several breaches.

The most breaches came from educational entities and government agencies. Not included in this report is the TJX breach, as it was primarily a retail breach.
